Santa’s annual world tour is fast approaching – the one day he reluctantly puts down his beloved board games to spread holiday cheer. So I’ve compiled a list just for him (and maybe for you too): ten fantastic board game stocking stuffers guaranteed to bring you joy on Christmas morning.
Most of these games are tried, tested, and loved—straight from my own collection. The others? They’re on my letter to Santa, sent express to the North Pole.
SCOUT
Oink Games has a knack for creating big fun in tiny packages, and SCOUT is no exception – making it a standout pick for a fantastic stocking stuffer.
This clever little card game begins with each player dealt a hand of cards that must remain exactly as it is – no rearranging allowed. Then the game kicks off with the first player laying down a combination of cards, like a straight (4-5-6) or duplicates (a pair of twos).
On your turn, the goal is simple: outdo the previous player by playing a stronger combination – triples beat pairs, and longer straights trump shorter ones. If you can’t beat the current play, you’ll need to pick up a card from the center. This not only weakens the active combination but bolsters your hand for potential comebacks.
The round ends when someone plays all their cards or no one can top the current combination. After which, points are tallied, and the game resets for another go.
What makes SCOUT such a standout is its balance of strategy and restraint. Timing your big combos is key – but resisting the temptation to unleash them too early is a delightful challenge. Add to that its small footprint and engaging mechanics, and you’ve got a game that’s as much a joy to play as it is to gift.
Pros & Cons
+ Compact, travel-friendly design
+ Unique and engaging gameplay
+ Addictive gameplay you can play for hours
– Theme is minimal and may not grab everyone

Schotten Totten
Looking for a fun, fast-paced head-to-head game this holiday season? Schotten Totten delivers the perfect mix of luck, strategy, and quick thinking – ideal for when you’re dodging nieces and nephews showing off their new toys.
Much like SCOUT, you’ll use classic card combinations like straights, flushes, and three-of-a-kind. The goal? Claim control of seven runic stones that sit between you and your opponent.
But where Schotten Totten stands out is that you’re not aiming for the best combinations—just ones that outmatch your opponent’s. This subtle shift makes bluffing and card management critical. Knowing when to drop a powerhouse hand and when to offload weaker cards can mean the difference between victory and defeat.
This back-and-forth battle of wits often comes down to the wire, with both players vying for that all-important final stone. Fast to learn, dynamic to play, and endlessly replayable, Schotten Totten is a fantastic stocking stuffer that promises spirited duels long after the wrapping paper is gone.
Pros & Cons
+ Perfect for two players
+ Easy to learn, hard to master
+ Great for some competitive ribbing
– Can feel luck-based at times

High Society
One of Reiner Knizia’s finest auction games, High Society is all about flaunting your wealth through extravagant purchases. Think dressage lessons, luxurious perfume, and fine wine—but beware! While reckless spending might prove you’re the richest, the player with the least money at the end of the game is promptly disqualified.
And honestly, good riddance! We can’t be seen cavorting with such paupers.
This brilliant mechanism both critiques and captures the opulence of high society. Every bid is a nail-biting choice, as you’re torn between splurging to prove your status and holding back to avoid ruin. The tension is heightened by the game’s unpredictable ending, which keeps everyone guessing about a card’s true value until it’s too late.
With its simple rules and hilariously cutthroat premise, High Society makes for a perfect Christmas day game – especially for a family that loves a bit of playful competition.
Pros & Cons
+ Clever blend of strategy and tension
+ Quick to learn
+ Great for groups who love to bluff
– Can feel punishing for overly cautious players

Fort
Often called a reverse deck-building game, Fort starts with the familiar mechanics of classics like Dominion – and then gleefully tosses some of those standards straight out of the treehouse.
Here’s the twist: any unused cards left in your hand at the end of your turn are fair game for other players to recruit. This keeps your deck in a constant state of flux, forcing you to adapt your strategy on the fly. If you want to hold onto a valuable card, you’ll need to play it before someone else snags it – adding a layer of urgency and tension to every turn.
But it’s not just the gameplay that shines—it’s the style. Kyle Ferrin’s whimsical art and Leder Games’ signature charm ooze across every card, like an overstuffed ice cream cone dripping onto your fingers. Fort isn’t just a game; it’s a joyful celebration of childhood antics.
That said, Fort does take a bit of effort to learn, especially compared to the other games on this list. If you’re gifting it and want to dive in right away, be sure to skim the rulebook beforehand—it’ll save you some time when the wrapping paper clears.
Pros & Cons
+ Dynamic and tactical gameplay keeps you on your toes
+ Kyle Ferrin’s charming, vibrant artwork
+ Unique twist on deck-building mechanics
– Can be tricky to learn for new players
– Gameplay might feel chaotic for those who prefer stability

Fantasty Realms
Fantasy Realms is like the classic tale of trading up from a paperclip to a mansion. You begin with a simple hand of seven cards and transform it by swapping cards with the market, all in pursuit of crafting the most powerful combination by the game’s end.
As you trade cards in and out, you’ll uncover clever combos and synergies. Each card interacts uniquely with others, sparking creativity and rewarding experimentation as you refine your hand.
But there’s always a touch of chaos, as you hope the right cards come your way. It’s like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle where the picture is entirely up to you – and your competition.
The game plays quickly, making it great for shorter sessions. The only drawback? Scoring can get a little mind-bending thanks to the wild combos, but thankfully, scoring apps are available to keep the math manageable.
Pros & Cons
+ Fast-paced and easy to learn.
+ Tons of creative possibilities with card combos.
+ Compact and portable.
– Scoring can be confusing without an app.

Decrypto
This party game is easier to play than it is to explain.
In Decrypto, you play in one of two rival teams of code-crackers, trying to decipher the other team’s secret code while protecting your own.
Each round, one player on your team gives cryptic clues to communicate a sequence of numbers without making it too obvious. The twist? Both your team and the opposing team will try to decrypt the code before it’s revealed.
The stakes are high: if the other team cracks your code twice, they win. But if your own team flubs their interpretation twice, you lose.
The art of Decrypto lies in walking the fine line between clarity and secrecy—crafting clues that your teammates grasp but leave your opponents scratching their heads.
While it lacks the boisterous hilarity of other party games, Decrypto shines in its thoughtful, strategic gameplay. For a group that loves deduction and clever wordplay, this is a standout pick.
Pros & Cons
+ Satisfying mix of deduction and strategy
+ Engaging for larger groups
+ Encourages clever, creative thinking
– Less suited for groups seeking lighthearted fun
– Can feel a bit complex for casual players
– May not fit in a stocking

Welcome to the Dungeon
Five years after my initial review, my opinion of Welcome to the Dungeon remains unchanged: it’s still one of my favorite bluffing games.
Players in Welcome to the Dungeon take turns boasting about who can survive the most perilous dungeon crawl. On your turn, you’ll either raise the stakes, by adding monsters to the dungeon or stripping yourself of valuable equipment, or pass.
Each turn player’s push the tension higher, as you try to one-up one another until only one remains willing – or reckless – enough to enter the dungeon with whatever gear is left.
Welcome to the Dungeon thrives on mistakes, whether you’re underestimating the dungeon’s perils or luring opponents into overconfidence. Either way, you’ll find yourself walking the fine line between boldness and disaster, with every decision deliciously fraught with risk.
It’s quick, clever, and endlessly engaging—a perfect pick for any group that loves a good laugh and a test of nerve.
Pros & Cons
+ Tense and engaging bluffing mechanics
+ Fast-paced and easy to teach
+ Encourages lots of playful interaction
– Can feel a bit repetitive after multiple rounds
– Risk/reward balance may not appeal to all players

Shamans
Shamans is a standout 2021 release from Studio H, the same publisher behind the excellent Oriflamme (another great stocking stuffer!).
This time, they’ve delivered a unique blend of trick-taking and social deduction, where players secretly take on the roles of good or bad shamans, working to tilt the spiritual balance toward their side.
Every trick comes with tension as playing an off-suited card pushes the bad shamans closer to victory. You must uncover allies and coordinate with them if you want to stay in the game.
But that’s not all, the highest and lowest cards in each trick earn their players powerful abilities or tokens—like switching loyalties, eliminating rivals, or revealing allegiances.
This forces you to think on two levels: outplaying your opponents in the trick while planning ahead to secure the tools your team needs to succeed. Lose focus, and you might find yourself outmaneuvered!
Although social deduction games aren’t typically my favorite, Shamans is an intriguing exception. Its combination of strategic card play and hidden roles feels fresh and engaging, especially since I’m deep in a trick-taking binge thanks to The Crew: Mission Deep Sea.
Pros & Cons
+ Unique blend of trick-taking and social deduction
+ Engaging abilities that deepen the strategy
+ Gorgeous artwork and components
– Requires a group comfortable with social deduction
– Can be intense for casual players

Hanamikoji
Recently released under the new name Jixia Academy, Hanamikoji is a brilliant two-player game of tactical trades and tough choices.
Each round, you have just four unique actions to choose from, and every single one feels crucial.
Take this, for example: you must offer your opponent three cards. They get first pick, leaving you with the leftovers. It’s a simple action, but deciding which cards to offer becomes a delicate balancing act. You’ll weigh their strategy against your own—what do they need? What do you want? Can you structure the trade so both sides gain, but you come out ahead?
And that’s just one action. Each of the four offers a distinct challenge, pushing you to rethink your tactics with every move.
For a game with such a minimal ruleset, Hanamikoji delivers a brilliantly tense experience, a masterclass in strategic design.
Pros & Cons
+ Deep strategy packed into a short play time
+ Compact design, perfect for travel or small spaces
+ Beautiful artwork capturing the beauty of Geishas
– Not a relaxing game by any means
– Can get lost in all of possibilities

The Crew: Mission Deep Sea
The Crew: Mission Deep Sea is a masterclass in small-box gaming. Its cooperative twist on trick-taking delivers a gameplay experience that’s intuitive, thought-provoking, and impossibly addictive.
Each game begins with a set of trick-taking objectives dealt out, each varying in difficulty. From there, you and your teammates must work together to achieve these goals – without saying a word.
This silence turns a familiar genre into a high-stakes puzzle. With every trick, you’ll need to carefully consider your role – are you supporting your team’s success or securing the win for this hand?
Adding to its brilliance, the objective deck is incredibly deep and diverse. No two games feel the same, as each challenge presents a fresh and intricate puzzle to solve.
Combined with the game’s fast pace and effortless setup, and it’s no surprise that The Crew: Mission Deep Sea is one I’ve played over thirty times this year—and still can’t get enough of.
Pros & Cons
+ Engaging cooperative gameplay
+ Fresh and varied objectives
+ Scale difficulty to suit your preferred challenge
– Requires a group invested in silent teamwork
– Tricky for players unfamiliar with trick-taking mechanics

That wraps up our list of stocking stuffers here at Roll to Review! But now it’s your turn – what games are you hoping to find under the tree this year? Let me know in the comments below; I’d love to hear your picks!
Scout is such a wonderful game, though it needs at least 4 in my opinion. Or at least it drastically changes at lower than 4. I hope you get to try it soon!
Great to hear your opinion on it. Funnily enough after I posted this article I got a marketing email from the game store that they’re taking pre-orders for it.
Suffice to say I’ll get my chance! I’ll make sure to play it with 4+. Thanks for the tip!
