You’ve heard of board game accessories, but have you heard of board game coffee?

In what might be the weirdest board game press release I’ve ever read, the UK-based board game merchandise store Meeple Design is now selling board game coffee.

I’ve written about Meeple Design before, as well as interviewed Tony Webb, one of the enthusiastic minds behind the store. Up until now, however, they’ve mainly focused on gorgeous minimalistic board game posters and other merchandise such as cushions, accessories and mugs.

So maybe it shouldn’t be surprising that they’re branching out into the coffee market.

But what exactly is board game coffee? Here’s how they explained it in their press release:

Meeple Coffee is a specialty coffee brand for tabletop gamers launched by Meeple Design, created out of our love for the board gaming & TRPG space and of course, good quality coffee.

Meeple Coffee uses only the best quality beans which are ethically sourced from a variety of smallholders worldwide. By working with small coffee roasters whose mission is to be carbon neutral and using recyclable materials where possible, which includes the coffee bags, we have a shared ethos towards sustainability. In addition, Meeple Coffee works with a select number of independent green coffee suppliers, ensuring that the supply chain is fully traceable, sustainable and helps to bring social change within coffee-growing communities.

Civilisation’s Foundation flavour is for those who want to build.

They’re initially offering five flavours of board game coffee that you can brew and drink alone or pair with your favourite board game.

These pairings include:

  • Farmer’s Choice Coffee pairs with Scythe, Agricola, Caverna and Settlers of Catan
  • Captain’s Clarity Decaf Coffee pairs with Starship Captains, Eclipse, and Terraforming Mars
  • Explorer’s Treasure Coffee pairs with Lost Ruins of Arnak, Diamant, and Treasure Island
  • Hero’s Upgrade Coffee pairs with Gloomhaven, Dungeons and Dragons, Dice Throne and Descent
  • Civilisation’s Foundation Coffee pairs with Through the Ages, 7 Wonders, and Mosaic

When it comes to the battle between tea and coffee, my allegiance is firmly with the tea camp. As I’ve never been able to get over the bitterness of coffee. However, reading the descriptions of these flavourings is making my mouth water!

My personal favourite is the Hero’s Upgrade, described as:

A medium light roast Brazilian coffee, with notes of caramel, milk chocolate and snickers.

Yum! That sounds nothing short of delicious.

However, it’s not just the board game coffee that draws you in, but the artwork attached. Meeple Design doesn’t shy away from its influences, creating some recognisable and playful images. For instance, the Farmer’s Choice artwork combines the instantly noticeable mechs from Scythe with the sheep and farming from Agricola and Settlers of Catan.

Thankfully, for non-coffee drinkers like myself, these images can be bought separately as posters or on coffee mugs and would make a welcome addition to any board game room.

If you’re looking to buy, Meeple Coffee is available right now and can be purchased individually or on a subscription basis for 10% off. They’re not an affiliate of Roll to Review, although I am a fan of their moxie.
