Freelancers: A Crossroads Game will be Plaid Hat Games’ fourth game using the crossroads system they came up with way back in 2014 with Dead of Winter. Since then, they released the widely criticised game Gen7, before bouncing back and making some adjustments for the wonderful Forgotten Waters.
The biggest adjustment made for this latest title was the inclusion of a mobile app. This allowed the designers and writers to have more control over the story they wanted to tell. One of my favourite features was the reoccurring characters that would pop up from time to time.
The writing was on point and funny too – which given how many comedians are complaining about political correctness, isn’t too easy to do these days.
All of this is to say that Freelancers: A Crossroads Game is coming out at GenCon later this year.
And I can’t wait to get my hands on it.

From the mouth of marketing
While Forgotten Waters was all about pirates, Freelancers takes aim at fantasy role-playing games. Where you take on the role of an adventurer, and go through several campaign scenarios. Whereby you’ll be making rushed decisions, meet interesting characters, and all in all, have a good time.
Plaid Hat Games had this to say about their new game:
Congratulations! Humanity is dead! The bad news is that all they left behind is their garbage and a broken gig economy. That’s why we need freelancers like you who are ready to take any job, no matter how loathsome. As a freelancer, you will delve into ruins, brave the wilds, and slay the hordes of hideous creatures that litter the dark forgotten corners of the world. All so you can gather loot and return home, ready to blow it all and start over again the next day. It’s a lousy gig, so it’s perfect for the likes of you.
Freelancers: A Crossroads Game condenses the fantasy RPG campaign experience into a single night of fun and mayhem. Create a character, roll funky dice, and blaze your way through multiple stories set in a world of magic, monsters, and murder. Better yet, no game master is required, as a magical companion app does all the storytelling for you! Immerse yourself in fully-voiced, industry-leading audio as you play. Explore hundreds of branching paths in five highly replayable campaigns. Mix and match a multitude of species and jobs to build your own unique character. Pick up and play, simple rules, low commitment and no prep.
Become a legend, if you’re lucky, and carve your name on the pipes of the city!

Everything we know about Freelancers
From the pictures shown, Freelancers looks eerily similar to Forgotten Waters. You have a map that you’ll be travelling, a book of locations where one side will show the location, and the other side will have the actions you can take. Meanwhile, everyone has a different board on which they’ll be tracking who-knows-what.
Oh, and there will also be the return of the app with professional voiceovers.
However, it’s the new components that are getting me excited. Like the player sheets that are cut in half, so you can mix and match who you want to be. As well as the followers, whose quirky artwork is endearing, if not a bit unnerving.
The only thing giving me pause for concern over Freelancers: A Crossroads Game is the first-time designer Duncan Shultz and the lack of Isaac Vega. Noting that the two times Plaid Hat Games has got the system right, Isaac Vega was involved. Meanwhile, Gen7 was the only other time they introduced a new solo designer into the system.
No matter what, I’m excited for another entry into this wonderful system.
