Welcome to The List!

All hail Jimmy Neutron. I’ve had a brain blast.

As both a terrible programmer, and board game enthusiast. I like lists. I like big lists, and tiny little baby lists. So what should a list lover do? Maybe create a list?

I’m going to rank my collection of games, on a semi-regular basis. Providing my woefully witty commentary along the way. Each game will be ranked on the day, but then added to a mega-list.

What I love about this idea is that I get away from the concept of board games being good, or bad, or great. As to be honest, most board games I play are good, but if you keep saying games are good you’re not really providing context around how good it is. A list will force me to make hard decisions, while also giving you context around how good I think a game is.

Brilliant, right?

You can see my work so far by going to The Board Game List. Which is also accessible from the navigation bar at the top. And if you’re back to this page, and realise that all the game reviews are missing. That’s because they have been move to their own pages, check them out here:

  1. Dave, I pretty much agree with you here. Dinosaur Island was OK, but it didn’t really grab me. Root was fun, but it takes multiple plays to really figure out best approaches for different factions, I think. And Dune: Imperium is a blast. I DO love the Dune series, but this game has a terrific blend of deck building and agonizing worker placement decisions. It is currently in a solo rotation I have with two other fantastic games that came out recently: Excavation: Earth, and the Anachrony Infinity upgrade — the new expansions in there are mind-blowing. Keep on posting!

    1. Welcome back Anton! Good to see you again. Even though we’re in agreeance about Dinosaur Island, I am really curious about Dinosaur World to see if they fixed the things I didn’t like about it.

Given your depth of knowledge on Dune is it Benny Jesserit? Or Been Guess-erit? Or some weird combination.

How is Excavation:Earth? I was looking at it on Kickstarter, but I had too many others going on at the time and it fell off. Would love to hear good things!

  2. Welcome back! Haven’t heard from you in a while.

Root is the only one I’ve played, though I have Dune: Imperium on order because it looks fabulous.

Root I definitely need to get some more games in, though I’m glad the app has asynchronous play so at least I can say I’ve played it more than once (just once on the table).

Looking forward to more of these!

    1. Thanks Dave! I’ve been keeping up with your site in the meantime. So I feel like I haven’t left.

Dune Imperium is something special, and I think you’re going to love it when it arrives. The two player implementation is pretty good – but you’re not going to fit it into a lunch time. Haha 😉

For Root, I was so close to buying the Steam App – but COVID hasn’t been toooo damaging for us in Australia. So thankfully, I got to meet up with my squad before I pulled the trigger.

What’s your favourite faction so far? I’ve only been playing with the base ones so far. And even though I don’t know how to play them… I want to play with the mice some more.

      1. Thank you! I’m glad you’ve been keeping up.

I’d have to say my favourite is the Eyrie, though I actually won a game with the Vagabond too. That can be quite enjoyable (not just the winning LOL)

My only play on the table had all six factions (four plus the first expansion) but I was the Eyrie there too so I don’t really know how well they work.

        1. Geez Louise, it’d be hard to keep up with everything on a full table. But have to say I do enjoy the Eyrie, they have such a satisfying puzzle to solve. And when you hit your stride mid game. Watch out everybody!
