Board Game News! – 10/04/2019

This week sees the return of Plaid Hat Games, a new Ryan Laukat reveal, and more than enough Kickstarters to leave your wallet begging for mercy.

Spooky….. oooooOOOOOOooooo

Abomination: The Heir of Frankenstein is on schedule from Plaid Hat Games. Finally a game that speaks to me. Not that I can relate to manoeuvring around London and finding left over body parts. However, the quirky dark theme demands attention. Plus, there are going to be crossroad-like events. One of my favourite mechanics. I’m looking forward to this.

Seconds before disaster: Titanic 1912

Ryan Laukat announced a new title called Sleeping Gods. A cooperative board game where you and your friends are sailors sailoring across the ocean. Running into monsters, or having misadventures this game is fitting the mould of 7th Continent. You play one game, but over many, many sessions. Knowing that, and knowing how Laukat creates a world and narrative in his board games; I’m interested.

Onto the Kickstarters!

Speaking of Ryan Laukat, Roam is now on Kickstarter. This little area control game looks like a mashup between Tash Kalar, and NMBR 9. Which to me sounds like a great combination.

Blood on the Clocktower may be the best social deduction game on the market. The SUSD guys and others have gone rabid over it, which means there must be something good. However, it’s at an insane price point for a social deduction game. Why they didn’t offer a lower tier is beyond me.

Huge fan of the Kingdom Rush app and this looks to be a cool adaptation. Monster cards are screaming towards your base, and you must clear them out by firing tetrominoes at them. It has the potential to be great coop game, but I’m worried it’s going to rely on one person figuring out the puzzle, and everyone else following along. Which will diminish the games interactivity.

Another one to keep your eye on is Valley of the Kings. A super duper well regarded deck-builder that never saw the same fame as Dominion. To be fair no deck-builder has seen the same fame as Dominion. If you want to read more about it – head on over to Dude Take Your Turn for a great run down.

I’m counting down the days until Vital Lacerda’s next game (On Mars) arrives on Kickstarter. 9 days. I’m also counting down the days until his last Kickstarter game arrives at my door. I don’t have a number for that, but it must be close! It’s started arriving in US. I’m super excited.

I’m also really excited about the new Hellboy Movie. I don’t have high hopes for it. As the trailers have been awful. However, it’s Hellboy, so how bad can it be… right?
