Board Game News! – 20/03/2019

Remember that scene from Terminator 2 where Arnie’s thumbs up sinks into the molten steel. You don’t cry because you’ll know he’ll be back. Well, replace Arnie’s golden thumb with Dunethe boardgame. After 35 years, it has returned.

FFG had previously tried to bring it back in an updated fashion with Rex: Final Days of an Empire. It ended up being polarizing, with some loving the gameplay changes. Others not so much. They craved Dune.

The question for the rest of us who won’t be high on nostalgia – will it be worth the wait? A lot has changed in the world of board games. Will it still be the Goliath it was against today’s competition?

A huge worm rises out of the Dune. People are screwed!

What’s your feeling on expansions? Love ‘em, or hate ‘em?

Your answer determines your reaction to this next list. Which will introduce you to more colons than a internship at the proctologists.

Teotihuacan: Late Preclassic period, Terra Mystica: Merchants, Terraforming Mars: Turmoil, and Anachrony: Fractures of Time.

How are you feeling?

Out of all of these the only one I’m truly excited for is Terraforming Mars. But I can’t keep up. You’d think FFG was the ones behind the game.

Next is the announcement of the ultimate Christmas board game. Already a Jake Peralta favourite, it’s Die Hard: The Nakatomi Heist Board Game. A one versus many game. Obviously. But something rubs me the wrong way when a board game has the word board game in their title.

It’s weird. It’s weird right?

On the topic of action heroes that don’t give a fudge, Judge Dread: Helter Skelter is coming. It’s based on Martin Wallace’s Wildlands game, that I’ve heard nothing but good things about.

Finally, at least before we jump into Kickstarter Korner. Restoration Games has partnered with Mondo Games to recreate Star Wars: Epic Duels in the form of Unmatched. An asymmetric tactical fighter using publicly available pop culture characters, and absolutely stunning artwork. It’s worth a look.

Four cards from the game Unmatched. All From Alice in Wonderland.
That Jabberwock card is going to give me nightmares. No joke.

Age of Steam deluxe is up on Kickstarter for a couple more days if you’re ready to jump on that train. Thankfully, it seems that a lot of the drama surrounding this game and Martin Wallace has cleared up. Making me morally and ethically able to buy.

However, not before seeing more dirty laundry than I wanted from both EGG and Martin Wallace. Who lost a lot of credibility in my books. That said, it won’t stop me from backing On Mars coming to Kickstarter next month.

I’m such a gross consumer. I need a shower.

Root is back!

Although it only barely just left. It’s returned with moles! Can you dig it?

This new expansion – another one! Adds an additional map, a new deck, and two new factions. But for first time buyers there is another advantage. For 5 dollarydoos you can pick up the balanced and updated faction boards. Something I’m super excited about.

Shem Phillips quietly continues to pump out more and more games. I’m still waiting on that sci-fi game. But for now Paladin’s of the West Kingdom will have to do.

I love the world he’s created, and given his reputation I’m sure this one will be a keeper. With only 40 hours to go, it’s time for some impulse buying.

A special shout out to the No Pun Included Kickstarter. While I disagree vehemently with some of their opinions. (Now Boarding is the game of the year – what??? I don’t think so.) I always enjoy their videos, and think they bring a lot to board gaming.

So support them!

Alright, I’m outta here. See ya next week.

P.S. I picked up this bargain: The Great Western Trail for 67.99 with free shipping from OzGameShop. Only one left. Enjoy!
