Board Game News! – 18/12/2018

It’s 542430 seconds till Christmas.

But who’s counting?

And who’s eyeing off their board game sized presents under their tree. Not me. Instead I’m bringing you the latest board game news. So don’t go anywhere!

Tasty Minstrel Games is winding back the clock to a time where there were no clocks. Not even a sundial.

A cave man and woman wrapped in basic furs, protect their child.
Simpler times

Dawn of Mankind is a worker placement game that has your meeples work, grow old, and die. While that hits a little too close to home. The mechanic seems similar to the one found in The Village.

Except there is no village.

Your meeples roam the countryside collecting food, having children, creating art, and inventing things. Where you roam seems to play an important part as you may help or hinder your opponent. With box art from a Roll to Review favourite – Kwanchi Moriya – this is one I’m looking out for.

Now, you know about Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. What you mightn’t have known is that they’re still popular outside of the 80’s, and outside of teenage boys and teenage men drooling over Megan Fox. Indeed, IDW has been publishing a series of comics by Kevin Eastman since 2011.

And they’re damn good.

They didn’t stop there though. They’ve made a board game. And it’s damn good. Or at least by all metrics I have on hand. Sitting healthily at 7.7 on BGG, and more than a few second-hand accounts on Reddit.

Hitting Kickstarter in January are two new expansions: Change is Constant, and City Fall. They’re standalone games, holding more than forty miniatures. Cowabunga!

This cover gets me pumped!

AEG is going where no man has gone before with an expansion to Space Base. They’re hailing it as a “Saga Expansion”. Which seems to be marketing mumbo jumbo for campaign game.

Anyway, it’s called Space Base: The Emergence of Shy Pluto. And I have no idea what that means.

Nobody does.

But it’s provocative.

In other news, everyone is holding their wallets tightly and waving off of December Kickstarters. As January and February look to be jam packed full of board gaming goodness.

I, on the other hand, have waded knee deep into the depths of Celtic mythology and Arthurian legends and backed Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon.

It’s from Awaken Realms, who previously published Nemesis and This War is Mine: The Board Game. Both are rated 8 or over on BGG. Which is a sign of pedigree. Plus the theme and the art are so interesting tickle my fancy so much the game may as well have been emailed to me by the Lady in the Lake.

King Arthur lays dead on the round table. Sword through his stomache. Creepy statue stares over him.
This is straight bad-ass

Meanwhile, there’s an interesting dexterity game that is making the rounds called Stonehenge and the Sun. You take turns placing the great rocks of Stonehenge around the circle. Then you turn up your inner Miley Cyrus. As you swing the sun like a wrecking ball over your construction.

Knocked over rocks score you penalty points.

Setup has you attach the metal ball to the ceiling. Which may restrict the amount of times you bring it out. However, if you ever wanted to recreate the scene from This is Spinal Tap. Well…

Before we announce the article of the week. It’s time to celebrate the amazing community we’re a part of. u/wolfncheapclothing over on Reddit showed off his Redwall inspired reskin of Android: Netrunner. Which is absolutely stunning.

You can’t even tell it’s the same game.

Article of the Week

Every week we look out for new board games, and every week we throw our money at the latest and greatest.

It doesn’t have to be like that.

Board games can be cheap too. In fact, the best value for your money is a deck of 52 playing cards, and this post by Will Roya. He outlines over forty different games you can play with a standard deck.

The same amount of miniatures in the new TMNT game.
