February News Dump

Time Marches on. February for me, was quite successful. I got a major promotion at work, and my son learnt to roll over. Thankfully, one of us is pulling their weight. In terms of the website, we now have a new navigation menu which I hope you’ve already used, and enjoyed.

That’s it! Let’s talk games.

Over the Shoulder

If you missed out on any reviews this month now’s your chance to take a look back:

Board Game Haul

This month saw a few Kickstarters arrive on my doorstep. Kickstarters are like drunk buying from Amazon, at a certain point you forget what you ordered, and when it arrives it’s always a pleasant surprise.

Deception: Undercover Allies: Deception is my favourite social deduction game. Therefore when the chance came to Kickstart the expansion, I went all in. Well, not all in, but I did pick up some additional extras in some microscope tokens, metal badges, and some deluxe role cards – which really give the game a noir feel. Overall, really happy with what I got, looking forward to breaking it out.

Hardback: I have a very high opinion of Tim Fowers as a game designer. I think he makes games that are interesting, and he’s found an artist in Ryan Goldsberry who compliments his style perfectly. These guys are the peanut butter and jelly of the board game world. This game is a word building game, so it’s a deck builder where you make words. It has a lot more freedom, more gamey than it’s predecessor Paperback.

Azul: Brilliant game, highly recommended. I’ve already reviewed it, but the tl:dr is that if you haven’t already, buy this game.

Kingdomino: The winner of the 2017 Spiel des Jahres – Germany’s game of the year. Its quick play makes it easy to say: another game? Spatial puzzling, with some light strategy. I’m undecided whether it’s good, great, or fantastic. However, I’m looking forward to playing more.

Smile: This is the evolved version of the acclaimed game No Thanks. Which I’ve never played, but Z-man games has been killing it with their small box games of late, so I thought I’d jump on the wagon before we have another Arboretum on our hands – still waiting for that reprint Z-man! Smile seems light but tight, and plays up to five players. Cracking it out over the weekend, fingers crossed it’s a good one.

That’s it for February. How did you go? Get anything of note? Or play anything you’ve been putting off? Till next time!

    Congratulations on your promotion! Hooray!

Appreciate this time while your progeny is still largely immobile. Soon… soon… you will be having to rearrange your house (that you realized is actually an elaborate deathtrap)

Cheers mate! The promotion gave me Gloomhaven money. 😀 But now it’s out of stock. 😥

Also yes. To my delight and horror I finally got around to playing Junk Art. Fantastic game, but I might not be able to play it for another 4-5 years. Haha.

My sixth sense tells me Kingdomino will be a fantastic game

I’m enjoying it so far! Haven’t played enough to form a review yet though 😦

    Broken record time.

    Congrats on the promotion! 🙂

I need to see your review of Smile. I love No Thanks, so want to see what this is like.

One correction: I think it’s Tim *Fowers*, not “Flowers” 😉

QueenDomino is awesome, but I’ve not played King yet. From what I’ve heard, it is a good game but you may be better for having played this one first. I don’t know if you’d be able to go from Queen to King.

Haha thanks, and thanks for the correction. I do that all the time with Tim Fowers… I’m sorry Tim!

Also, in that case, I might have to pick up QueenDomino. I’ve heard it’s more gamey than the original, so it’s really up to taste. Though Kingdomino could stand to add a bit of meat onto its bones.
