Four Games to get Excited About

I was going through my collection the other day, and the reviews already up here on my website, and realized that I have a very strong persuasion to light games. Makes sense. I prefer games that I can put on the table and everyone has a good time. The downside to this is that it leaves a hole in my collection: medium weight games. Here are four medium weight games, that I’m extremely excited about:

Hellboy The Board Game: This isn’t a board game yet, it’s a news announcement, but holy crap what an announcement. When it comes to comic books, my three favourites are: Blacksad, Hellboy, and Batman. Suffice to say that I am very excited for this. It also appears to be a co-operative game, so I’m all in, baby. The Kickstarter begins in April, make sure to save some money for then.

One of my pride and joys

Whistle Stop: I’ve been a big fan of Bezier Games, owning everything Suburbia, a few of the One Night series, and dreaming about getting the Mad King Ludwig games. This is one of their latest games and it looks great. An introductory train game with pick up and deliver mechanics – another thing I’m missing from my collection. I love the pastel look of the game, and it’s getting really good reviews.

Raiders of the North Sea: Renegade Game Studios have done a stellar job of making sure I see as many pictures of this game on Twitter as possible. I’m finally succumbing to their advertising, because this game does look fantastic. I’m intrigued by the Viking theme, and had a tough time picking between this and Champions of Midgard. I prefer the art style in this game, but don’t be surprised if you see Champions of Midgard pop up next update.

Azul: There has been so much hype for this game that it’s taken the form of a cold fish that someone promptly picked up, and slapped me with. It’s a two to four player abstract game about laying tiles into patterns, and it’s gorgeous.  I’m only half sure as to what it is or how it plays, I just know that I will not stop until it is in my collection. I read a great review from Two off the Top, making it sound all the more enticing. Now, if only it came back in stock somewhere.

Well, that’s what I’m looking fourward to in January. I’ve already spent my board gaming budget this month, and I’m amid sorting out what to get in February. I’d love to buy Scythe, but that’s a little bit out of my budget, so it’s going to be a toss up between Whistle Stop and Dinosaur Island. However, if I see Azul come back in stock anywhere, I’ll probably pounce on that plus a smaller game.

My questions for you:

  • What games are you most looking forward to?
  • Are there any games you’d like me to review?

  1. Azul is an awesome game. I’ve played it twice now and it’s super-fun. I’m also really pumped about Raiders of the North Sea and would like to play Whistle Stop sometime.

I’m not really sure what I’m looking forward to, as I’m kind of a “I’ll play anything new” kinda guy. Not necessarily “new,” just new to me.

I’m looking forward to a new experience whatever it is.

Though if we could get my friend’s copy of Champions of Midgard to the table, that would be nice.

    1. A man after my own heart. Azul must be pretty great to make your number 9. 😉 I hope it takes you a while before you review Champions of Midgard my wallet can only take so much punishment, and it looks really good.

  2. Not sure if i will end up buying it… but i’m exited about the Kickass Board Game (CMON games). I wanna see what they do with it. if it looks good then it’ll be on my want list pretty quick.

    1. While I’m mild on Mark Millar’s writing (exception being Superman: Red Son) it’ll be interesting what they do with Kickass IP. I’d love it if they got the rights to use Nick Cages face. Just imagine the possibilities!

On the topic of comics, there’s a new Batman board game coming to kickstarter next month. It’s based on the same system used in the Conan miniatures game which is meant to be excellent.
